Judo is predominantly concerned with throwing and BJJ is primarily concerned with groundwork.

The BJJ Gi is constructed to have a tighter fit on the cuffs of the pants, the jacket and also around the chest than a Judo Gi. The Judo gi is usually a little heavier and a little more roomy than a BJJ gi.

The International Judo federation has very strict guidelines for the Judo Gi style and length of sleeves. The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation regulations for a BJJ Gi are more relaxed.

If you are planning on competing in Judo or BJJ, you should consider getting a Gi for that sport. You can use either type of gi in any of the NESF gi classes.

EXTRA EQUIPMENT
(What we recommend)
(What's the difference?)
The items below can be purchased at NESF.
MMA fight gloves
Boxing/Sparing Gloves
Shin Pads
Fight Shorts
Head Gear
Head Wraps
T-shirts
Instructional DVDs & books
WHAT TO BRING?
On your very first day, all you will need to bring is a pair of shorts & a t-shirt.

If your very first class is BJJ, you will need a Gi & a white belt. You can pick those up from the suggested links to the left, in the 'Extra Equipment' area.

2 things that you will want to bring as soon as you can are a mouthpiece and some type of groin protection. A normal baseball athletic supporter with a cup is fine. These can be purchased at Dick's sporting goods store, down the street from the gym.

JUST STARTING OUT?
If you have less than 30 days of experience,
you may only go to the fundamentals classes
until the instructors feel you are ready
for the regular classes.

This is where you will build a strong foundation and get a well-rounded understanding of the game.

Please note: Watching 'The Ultimate Fighter' on TV does not qualify as 'experience', and try not to fib about how much prior training you've had.
We will be able to tell.
